Assistant Chief Jeff Boyd began his career with the Marshall Police Department in March 2004. He is a graduate of Hallsville High School, class of 1994. Shortly after graduation, he signed a five-year commitment with the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. Upon completion of his enlistment, he received an honorable discharge, having earned the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. He graduated from the East Texas Police Academy in 2003 and has earned an Associate’s degree from Panola College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston University.
Assistant Chief Boyd served as a patrol officer, Field Training Officer, and an Investigator in the Special Operations Division (Narcotics) until his promotion to Sergeant in 2009.
During his tenure as a Sergeant, he was initially assigned to the Patrol Division as a shift supervisor. He later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division as a Detective assigned to Property Crimes.
In July 2015, Assistant Chief Boyd was promoted to Lieutenant where he served as a Shift Commander in the Patrol Division. In 2016, he was assigned to the role of Commander of the Hostage Negotiation Team. He was also assigned as an Investigator with the Office of Professional Responsibility during his time as a Lieutenant.
Assistant Chief Boyd was promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of Police in February 2023.
Assistant Chief Boyd is a graduate of the 82nd class of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership Command College. Of the roughly 78,000 peace officers in Texas, less than 3 percent have earned this certification. He has also completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Trilogy and holds a Master Peace Officer certificate through the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
