Commissioner Vernia Calhoun – District 5
Vernia Calhoun was elected as City Commissioner for District 5 in May 2014. Ms. Calhoun was born and raised in Marshall, Texas. She is a 1970 graduate of H.B. Pemberton High School, and a graduate of Draughn Business College. She retired in 2003 after 30 years of employment with General Motors Acceptance Corporation in Dallas, and moved back to Marshall in 2007.
Ms. Calhoun is presently employed with Marshall Independent School District as a substitute teacher. She is a member of the Harrison County Children’s Service Board, and chairman of the Rainbow Room that services our children and their everyday needs. She was also the first Harrison County Active Court Appointed Service Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children. She is a member of the New Town Neighborhood Association and a volunteer for the New Town Community Garden. Ms. Calhoun served for two years on the City of Marshall Planning and Zoning Commission, is a Junior Achievement and N.A.A.C.P. volunteer, and served on the Marshall Independent School District Bond Advisory Committee. She is a member of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church.
