Marshall Police Arrest Suspect in Smith Park Shooting

 

 

On March 31, 2015, at 6:59 PM, members of the Marshall Criminal Apprehension Team located a vehicle believed to be occupied by a wanted felon. Officers initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of George Gregg and Loop 390 on a Maroon 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe and arrested a black male, Harvey Justin Woodkins, Date of Birth May 16, 1992. Woodkins was arrested on a warrant for Deadly Conduct (3rd degree Felony) in

reference to a shooting that occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Smith Park, located on Spring Street in Marshall Texas.   No one was injured in the shooting.

 

Family and friends gathered Sunday afternoon, March 29, 2015 to celebrate the memory of Adrian Smith at Spring Street Park. The park was filled with men, women and children enjoying the spring weather. The party was winding down at approximately 8:25 PM when Marshall Police officers in the neighborhood heard several shots ring out.  Officers entered the park on foot attempting to locate the shooters and any potential victims. Officers were able to locate evidence, but no shooters or victims were found.

 

During an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Detectives received information that Woodkins was involved in the shooting.  Using this information, Detectives were able to obtain a felony warrant for Deadly Conduct on Woodkins. Detectives relayed the receipt of the warrant to the Patrol Bureau, both for Officer safety and for Officers to attempt to locate Woodkins.

 

Chief Jesus “Eddie” Campa stated, “Officers of the Marshall Police Department put

many hours into making an arrest in this shooting. Through the hard work of the Officers in the Patrol Bureau, MCAT, and the Criminal Investigations Bureau, we were able to name a suspect in the shooting, have a warrant issued and make an arrest quickly.  The Marshall Police Department is dedicated to take the criminal element off of the streets and keep Marshall a safe place.”
