Frequently Asked Questions

Is the water meter read each month?
Yes, we have three meter readers that alternate routes read each month.  This allows the meter readers to know where each meter in the system is located.  The meter reader enters the read from the meter into a Handheld Computer that does not have a previous reading available.  Each time a reading is entered into the computer the date and time is applied to the account.  After the route is complete, the route is unloaded and a meter route edit is checked for accounts that were missed or had an out of range consumption.

Why is my water bill high?
Your water bill, in most cases, consists of billings for water, sewer, refuse, and tax, (tax is applied to the refuse portion only).  If you feel your water consumption is out of line you may call (903) 935-4435 and we will send a Customer Service Person out to re-read your meter and to see if the meter indicates you have a leak.

Some of the biggest waste of water which causes your bill to increase are from leaks and toilets that may be leaking.  If you think you may have a silent leak at the toilet you may pick up a test tablet at the Water Billing Office, 401 S. Alamo St., Marshall, Texas.  The instructions for the use of the test tablets are on the package.

When is my bill due?
The City is divided into four billing cycles.  Each week a cycle is read and billed.  You have 15 days from the billing date to pay.  A 10% penalty will be added to your account on the 16th day.  A Final Reminder is then mailed and you have 15 more days to pay before your account is cut off.  In cases where you may need a few more days to pay, please notify the Water Billing Office before your scheduled cut off date and, when possible, we will give you an extension.

Who is responsible for refuse pickup?
The City of Marshall has an exclusive franchise with Allied Waste Services for refuse pickup.  The charge for this service is on your monthly water and sewer bill.  Residential accounts are billed $9.84 + .81 tax totaling $10.65 per month for twice a week pickup.  Commercial accounts are billed based on the amount of service required.  If your refuse is not picked up, please call Allied Waste Services at 1-800-678-7274 to report the problem.

Is recycling available?
Recycling service for residential customers is offered on Wednesdays at no charge.  If you would like to recycle, please call Allied Waste Services at 1-800-678-7274 to enroll in the recycling program and receive your blue recycling bin.  Recycling information is also available at the Water Billing Office, 401 S. Alamo St., Marshall, Texas.
