How do I apply for historic
landmark
designation for my property?
A major tool for the protection of Marshall’s historic
properties is the local historic landmark designation. Designation is offered for individual
properties (historic landmarks) and larger areas (historic districts). See “Historic
Designations” on the Historic Preservation main page of the City’s website for instructions and
forms for applying for landmark designation.
How to I get a grant to
restore my old home?
In general, there are limited grant funds for restoring
privately owned historic homes or businesses. See “Resources” on the Historic Preservation
page of the City’s website for links to possible resources for restoring older homes.
How do I be considered for an award
for work on my historic home?
Each year the Historic Landmark Preservation Award presents
awards to property owners who have contributed to the preservation of their older property by
making improvements to the property. Selection for recognition is based on the project’s
sensitivity to the historic character and fabric of Marshall’s buildings and historic
areas. Existing buildings have to be at least 50 years old. Projects do not have to be
extremely expensive or museum quality. Projects must reflect the original character of the
buildings and the neighborhood. See “Awards” on the Historic Preservation main page of the
City’s website for more information on the awards.
How do I form a neighborhood
association in my older neighborhood?
The City’s Historic Landmark Preservation Board’s “Neighborhood
Handbook” will step you through the process of forming an association. See “Historic
Neighborhoods” on the Historic Preservation main page of the City’s website for more
information.
